By \\[Ahmed Elashry], Sports CorrespondentNew York, September 8, 2025Carlos Alcaraz cemented his legacy as one of tennis’ modern greats on Sunday night, defeating Jannik Sinner in four sets to claim his second US Open title and sixth Grand Slam overall. The 22-year-old Spaniard described the triumph as the “best tournament” of his career as he regained the world No. 1 ranking and set his sights on completing a career Grand Slam with victory at the Australian Open.A Tournament to RememberAlcaraz delivered a masterclass at Flushing Meadows, displaying remarkable consistency throughout the two-week campaign. The final saw him outclass long-time rival Sinner 6-4, 3-6, 7-5, 6-3, in a performance that blended tactical brilliance with relentless intensity.“I feel like this is the best tournament that I have ever played,” said a jubilant Alcaraz after the win. “The consistency of my level during the whole tournament has been really, really high, which I’m really proud of, because it’s something that I’ve been working on.”Since May, Alcaraz has been nearly unstoppable, losing just one match—against Sinner in the Wimbledon final—and reaching eight consecutive finals, winning six. His current win streak now stands at 13 matches.Career Grand Slam in SightWith this latest US Open triumph, Alcaraz has now won each of the French Open, Wimbledon, and US Open twice. The Australian Open remains the final piece missing from the career Grand Slam puzzle—a challenge that now dominates his ambitions.“It’s my first goal, to be honest,” Alcaraz said. “When I go into the pre-season and think about what I want to improve and achieve, the Australian Open is right there. It’s always the main goal for me—to complete the career Grand Slam and maybe even a calendar Grand Slam someday. So it’s going to be great.”Revenge and RivalrySunday’s win also allowed Alcaraz to avenge his loss to Sinner at Wimbledon earlier this year. The Spaniard now leads their head-to-head 10–5, winning seven of their last eight meetings.“I studied that match,” Alcaraz said of his Wimbledon defeat. “We spoke about what we could have done better. We noted everything and worked on it. I just wanted to do the right things today—and it worked. It worked pretty well.”Sinner Reflects on DefeatDespite a strong showing throughout the tournament, Sinner admitted he was outplayed in the final. The Italian, who has enjoyed a breakout year of his own, acknowledged the need to evolve his game.“He changed up the game,” Sinner said. “That’s his style. He did everything slightly better. I was very predictable, and that’s something I need to change if I want to become a better player.”Sinner also hinted at a willingness to embrace short-term losses to pursue long-term growth. “Maybe even losing some matches from now on, but trying to do some changes, trying to be a bit more unpredictable as a player… that’s what I have to do.”As the tennis world looks toward 2026, Carlos Alcaraz continues to set the bar higher. With six Grand Slam titles at just 22 and a relentless drive for improvement, the Spanish sensation is not just aiming for history—he’s actively writing it.
