SME News Balkan. British No. 1 Jack Draper has announced he will miss the remainder of the 2025 tennis season due to an arm injury, ending a breakout year that had seen him surge into the world’s top 10 and contend for a spot at the prestigious ATP Finals in Turin. The 23-year-old withdrew from the US Open ahead of his second-round match after experiencing persistent discomfort in his left arm — the same arm that had kept him sidelined for seven weeks leading up to the tournament. Draper had defeated Argentina’s Federico Agustin Gomez in straight sets in the opening round while wearing a protective arm sleeve, but later revealed the injury had become “too much” to play through.“Unfortunately, the injury to my arm is something I have to rest and means I’ll be sitting out the rest of 2025,” Draper wrote in a statement on X (formerly Twitter). “It is very difficult for me to accept as I was building some incredible momentum this year and playing some great stuff.”Draper’s announcement comes as a major blow to British tennis fans and to his own ambitions of qualifying for the ATP Finals for the first time. The world No. 7 had put himself in strong contention to finish the season inside the top eight, buoyed by a stellar run that included his maiden ATP Masters 1000 title at Indian Wells in March and a runner-up finish at the Madrid Open in May.“This is just a bump in the road,” Draper added. “I’ve been through this before and I always come back stronger. I’m so motivated to fulfil my potential as a player. Huge thanks to everyone who backs me to do well and supports me on my journey. Can’t wait to get back out there and give it my all.”Draper has battled injuries throughout his young career, with shoulder issues keeping him out of Wimbledon in 2023 and hip tendinitis forcing his retirement in the first round of this year’s Australian Open against eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. Despite these setbacks, Draper has established himself as one of the most exciting talents on the ATP Tour, climbing to a career-high No. 7 in the world rankings this season. The Brit’s 2025 campaign has been highlighted by wins over several top-10 players, including Alcaraz, Taylor Fritz, Ben Shelton, and Holger Rune — particularly during his title-winning run in Indian Wells, which marked a significant breakthrough.Although Draper fell short of replicating last year’s US Open semi-final appearance and exited Wimbledon early at the hands of former champion Marin Čilić, his overall season has been viewed as a major leap forward. With roughly four months to recover, Draper will now set his sights on returning to full fitness for the start of the 2026 season, which begins with the Australian Open on January 18.
