SME News Balkan. Cabo Verde have produced one of the biggest surprises of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after securing a place in the knockout stage in their tournament debut. The African nation claimed an automatic qualification spot and will now face defending champions Argentina in the Round of 32.

With a population of just over half a million, Cabo Verde become one of the smallest nations ever to reach the World Cup knockout rounds, completing a remarkable journey that has captured global attention.

Goalless Draw Seals Historic Qualification

Cabo Verde booked their place after battling to a hard-fought 0-0 draw against Saudi Arabia in the final Group H fixture. Entering the match level on points with Uruguay but ahead on tiebreakers, they needed to match or better the South Americans’ result.

At the same time, Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0 thanks to a first-half goal from Alex Baena, ensuring Cabo Verde finished above Marcelo Bielsa’s side and advanced automatically.

Saudi Arabia pushed for the breakthrough that would have taken them into the knockout rounds, but Cabo Verde goalkeeper Vozinha delivered another outstanding performance, preserving a valuable clean sheet.

When the final whistle sounded, Cabo Verde’s players gathered to watch the closing moments of Spain’s victory before celebrating one of the greatest achievements in the country’s football history.

A Fairytale Run Continues

Cabo Verde’s World Cup success comes after steady progress on the international stage in recent years. Although they missed the most recent Africa Cup of Nations, they impressed throughout World Cup qualifying, losing only once in ten matches and finishing ahead of Cameroon.

Their resilience has continued on football’s biggest stage with draws against Spain, Uruguay and Saudi Arabia proving enough to reach the knockout phase.

Vozinha: “It’s a Dream to Face Argentina”

Veteran goalkeeper Vozinha admitted qualifying for the knockout stage exceeded expectations and described the upcoming match against Argentina as a dream.

“We never imagined we could achieve something like this, but we always believed in the quality of our team. Many people expected us to struggle, but we came here to compete.”

The 40-year-old also expressed his excitement about facing Lionel Messi and the reigning world champions.

“It is a dream for any footballer to play against Argentina and Lionel Messi. We are proud of what we have achieved and will enjoy this special moment.”

Representing a Nation With Pride

Vozinha said Cabo Verde’s success reflects the determination of its people.

“We come from a small country, but we have big hearts. Our families made many sacrifices, and we wanted to represent every Cape Verdean around the world. We have shown our passion, resilience and belief.”

Argentina Await in Historic Knockout Tie
