Jonathan Rea returns to World Superbikes to stand in for injured Jake Dixon at Portimao for Honda

SME News Balkan. Jonathan Rea is set for a stunning return to racing as he replaces injured Jake Dixon at the upcoming World Superbikes Grand Prix at Portimao.
Dixon has been ruled out of this weekend’s race in Portimao after suffering multiple fractures to his left wrist and hand during pre-season testing in Australia. The injury delays his much-anticipated debut in Superbike World Championship following his switch from Moto2.
Rea’s Shock Comeback
Six-time world champion Rea, who retired from full-time competition at the end of 2025, will step in for Honda Racing Corporation, where he currently serves as a test rider.
The Northern Irishman boasts an incredible 119 career wins and remains one of the most successful riders in World Superbikes history. His return at Portimao on March 28–29 offers a rare opportunity to add to that legacy.
Rea is no stranger to Honda machinery, having previously raced for the Japanese manufacturer between 2008 and 2014, achieving multiple race wins and a third-place finish in the championship during his final season with the team.
Dixon Faces Setback Ahead of Debut
For Dixon, the injury is a major setback at a crucial point in his career. After stepping up to World Superbikes, he was expected to make his debut this month, but that timeline has now been pushed back.
He is provisionally targeting a return at the Assen Round in April, though his recovery will determine whether that remains realistic.
Experience Meets Opportunity
Rea’s familiarity with both the track and the team makes him the ideal replacement. Having recently tested in Portugal, he arrives race-ready despite his retirement from full-time competition.
The comeback also marks his first competitive outing for Honda in over a decade, adding another compelling storyline to an already unpredictable World Superbikes season.
With Dixon sidelined and Rea back on the grid, all eyes will be on Portimao to see whether the veteran can once again make history.
