SME News Balkan. Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali says early reactions to the 2026 regulations have been “very positive,” despite mixed feedback from drivers and a vocal minority of critics.
After the first three races, the new era—defined by a major shift in power units and car behavior—has sparked intense debate. While some fans have questioned elements like qualifying dynamics and race management, Domenicali insists the bigger picture is clear: most fans are enjoying the increased action.
“Globally, the response is fantastic,” he said. “There’s more overtaking, more unpredictability—this is what people want.”
He acknowledged concerns, especially around qualifying, and confirmed ongoing talks with teams and the FIA to fine-tune the rules without losing the core philosophy. Adjustments could arrive as early as the Miami Grand Prix.
Domenicali also pushed back on claims that the racing feels “artificial,” pointing out that fuel-saving tactics and strategic racing have always been part of F1—even in the turbo era of the 1980s.
Driver criticism, including from world champion Max Verstappen, has been taken seriously. However, Domenicali stressed that F1 must balance driver input with the expectations of its growing global audience, now exceeding 800 million fans.
Looking ahead, he hinted that future regulations beyond 2030 may shift focus toward lighter cars, stronger combustion engines, and sustainable fuels, reflecting changes in the automotive industry.
“The sport is bigger than any individual,” Domenicali said. “We listen, we adapt—but we stay focused on the future.”
